Your Index Fund Holds 500 Companies. It Now Trades Like Two. The Nasdaq closed at a record on Monday and Nvidia touched an all-time high, and the headlines called it a broad rally. It was not broad. Two companies, Nvidia and Apple, now make up more than 15% of the S&P 500, a tighter grip than anything the dot-com era produced. The market most Americans own stopped being diversified while it was still setting records. |

The Scoreboard |
• The record: Nvidia closed Monday at $238.90, up 2.12%, with a market value near $5.8 trillion and closing in on $6 trillion. The Nasdaq set a fresh high at 27,477; the S&P 500 sat at 7,773.95, within about 1% of its August record.
• Two stocks, 15.6%: Nvidia is now 8.21% of the S&P 500 and Apple 7.40%, a combined 15.61%. At the March 2000 peak, the top two (Microsoft and GE) were 9.1%. The index has never leaned on two names this hard.
• Weight vs. earnings: Nvidia alone now outweighs the smallest 256 companies in the S&P 500 combined, yet those 256 firms earned $487.3 billion in operating income to Nvidia’s $197.6 billion. The price is three times as concentrated as the profit.
• The top of the book: the ten largest companies are 38.69% of the index, roughly three times the long-run average, a concentration one private-wealth desk said it had never seen before.
• The alternative: the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.31%, its highest since 2002, while the ISM services prices gauge jumped to 74. The risk-free payout is the richest in a generation.

The 401(k) that quietly stopped being diversified
Monday looked like a good day to own stocks. Nvidia printed a record at $238.90 and a market value nosing toward $6 trillion, the Nasdaq closed at an all-time high, and the anchors read it out as a rally. The word doing the quiet work in that sentence is “rally,” which suggests a crowd. This was closer to a parade with two floats and a long line of people walking behind them.
Here is the part that does not make the ticker. An S&P 500 index fund is weighted by size, so the biggest companies get the biggest vote. Nvidia at 8.21% and Apple at 7.40% now add up to 15.61% of the whole index. The last time anyone worried about concentration, in March 2000, the top two names came to 9.1%. We are well past that line, and most people crossed it without being asked.

Editor’s Note: While everyone was distracted by the SpaceX IPO, Elon Musk quietly filed a patent to protect his new invention, a new form of AI former tech executive Jeff Brown calls “M.A.G.I.” Click here to see the details or read more below because Elon Musk is predicting his new invention will launch a NEW industry that will grow more than 7 million percent in the coming years.
Dear Reader,
Elon Musk recently shared a private video of his new product with a Silicon Valley insider called Jason Calacanis…
The venture capitalist who turned $100,000 into $100 million when Uber went public.
And Jason was stunned. He said:
“I’ve seen [Elon’s new product], he’s making sick progress. He’s not showing it publicly…but wow… I think it will be the best selling product of all time.”
I couldn’t agree more.
In fact, when you click here and see this patent-protected technology…
I believe you’ll want to buy one for yourself as soon as it’s available.
We have so much to look forward to,
Jeff Brown Founder & CEO, Brownstone Research
P.S. By the way, when you click here…
I’ll discuss the stock you need to buy now… BEFORE this new product’s big launch. (No, it’s not Tesla or SpaceX.)

Weight has outrun earnings. Concentration can be earned; a company deserves a large share of the index when it earns a large share of the profits. This is where the number turns. Nvidia now carries more index weight than the smallest 256 companies in the S&P 500 put together. Those 256 companies earned $487.3 billion in operating income last year. Nvidia earned $197.6 billion, a real and remarkable figure, and still only about 40 cents on their dollar. The price has climbed three times as far as the profit base beneath it.
What 2000 actually taught. The lesson of the dot-com break was never that the internet was a hoax; it plainly was not. The lesson was that a handful of real companies can be priced for a future that arrives more slowly than the quote demands, and that when the top of the index is doing most of the lifting, the whole index falls when they stumble. We flagged the circular financing behind this boom over the weekend. The concentration is the same story told through the index: a few names holding up the number everyone watches.
The alternative is sitting right there. All of this is being priced against a 10-year Treasury paying 5.31%, the most it has offered since 2002. For thirty years the case for stretching into expensive stocks was that bonds paid nothing. That case is gone. A saver can now lock in better than 5% from the government and skip the question of whether two companies can keep carrying 500. The concentration bet is no longer the only game; it is a choice, measured against the richest safe yield in a generation.
Where that leaves you. Nothing here is a reason to dump your index fund, and a concentrated market can keep climbing for a long time. The useful move is to know what you actually hold. If your retirement sits in an S&P 500 fund, more than a seventh of it is two stocks, and a big share of its recent gain came from them. The question worth sitting with is whether that is the risk you thought you signed up for when someone told you an index fund was the safe, boring, diversified choice. An equal-weight version of the same index is one way to own the other 498 on purpose.
You can still call it an index fund. Just know that when you buy the market today, the market mostly buys Nvidia and Apple, and lets the other 498 come along for the ride.
